Redacting Records: What can and cannot be released (State-specific)

SEMINAR OVERVIEW

This seminar focuses primarily on applying investigative exemptions to law enforcement case files.  Learn how to best identify investigative information and how to exempt it based on your states’ statutes, attorney general opinions, and case law.

Learn how to identify and redact information that would jeopardize your investigation, the rights of the accused, or the privacy of individuals involved while still providing transparency into crime problems and your agency investigations.  You will learn also which exemptions still may apply beyond the closure of the case.  Topics include:

– Investigative and intelligence information;
– 911 and call for service information;
– Private and personal information;
– Arrest information for both adults and juveniles;
– Traffic accident information;
– Law enforcement recordings such as dash camera and body worn camera video, and
– Redaction exercises to demonstrate application of investigative exemptions.
