Who should attend: Records Personnel and Supervisors, Public Records Staff

Participants will develop a solid understanding of GA public records laws as well as how to conduct a records inventory and purge.

Topics include:

  • Overview of public records and accessing law enforcement records.
  • Receiving and responding to requests, managing and processing requests and proving records per state statute.
  • Information on Georgia statutes, attorney general opinions and court decisions related to releasing law enforcement information
  • Dive deep into what redactions are required or discretionary when it comes to common LE reports
  • Statutory exceptions related to public access of body-worn camera (BWC) footage, focusing on release requirements, privacy considerations, and practical guidance for balancing transparency with legal and ethical obligations.
  • Learn how to conduct a records inventory and purge and develop a standardized annual destruction process. This session will guide participants through the critical process of establishing a records inventory, highlighting its importance for compliance, efficiency, and risk management, and providing practical steps for creating and maintaining an effective inventory system.
  • Participants will also learn how to determine when law enforcement records can be purged.
