Overview
Seminar Overview (live online)
Who should attend: Staff who process BWC public records requests.
This course provides practical guidance on applying state-specific laws to public records requests involving law enforcement body-worn camera (BWC) footage. Participants will learn statutory requirements, exemptions, redaction obligations, and best practices specific to BWC video. Real-world scenarios and case examples will illustrate how to evaluate, process, and respond to BWC requests in compliance with state law.
This seminar will focus on potential exemptions and/or confidentiality specific to law enforcement recordings, such as:
- Specific statutory requirements for requesting BWC video;
- Statutory restrictions on releasing BWC videos;
- Identifying and redacting confidential information found in common BWC videos, such as:
- Personally identifying information;
- Drivers license and tag numbers;
- Identities of persons captured in BWC videos, including those directly involved as well as bystanders and juveniles;
- Locations related to an expectation of privacy; and
- Different types of law enforcement information such as investigative information or investigative techniques.
