This program offers valuable insights into Washington’s Public Records Act, best practices for managing and releasing law enforcement information, and practical guidance on redaction and compliance. MORNING SESSION: PUBLIC/OPEN RECORDS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT

Start here if you would like to learn more about your state’s statutes, attorney general opinions and court decisions related to releasing law enforcement information found in incident and offense reports, investigative records, and law enforcement recordings such as dash camera and BWC videos. Learn about managing requests for records including time requirements, acceptable request methods, fees, and best practices for protecting the interests of both the requester and your agency.

AFTERNOON SESSION: RELEASING AND REDACTING

Learn statutory requirements, opinions and court decisions, and how to identify and redact information from police reports, audio, juvenile, traffic records, personnel records, and administrative records following state law, including balancing transparency with confidentiality. Pre-requisite: Public/Open Records for LE or basic understanding of WA’s PRA.
