Is the relationship between your police department and your I.T. department good?  Are the needs of the police department being met?  All too often police departments and I.T. personnel have divergent priorities instead of both being focused on public safety.  Share the results of this survey with your staff in order to facilitate the change you need.

Some police agencies have an internal IT unit while others rely on a city/county IT department.  In some cases there may be a city/county IT department in place but several IT personnel are assigned strictly to work in the police department.

Whichever model is in place, it is imperative that the police/I.T relationship is one that mutually works towards making public safety goal #1.  This simply means when CAD, RMS, mobile computers, NCIC, or any other program or computer goes down, it gets fixed ASAP.
